Luce ha diciassette anni e vive con l’adorata madre Valeria in una grande casa sul mare di Cagliari, coccolata dall’amore incondizionato di una famiglia quasi tutta al femminile. Baciata dalla bellezza e da un’intelligenza fuori dal comune, a scuola riesce senza troppi sforzi ma non ha grandi rapporti con i coetanei. A dire il vero, non assomiglia per niente agli adolescenti che la circondano.

Perché Luce, nella sua età e soprattutto nel corpo di una ragazza della sua età, non si sente per niente a proprio agio. È come se appartenesse a una declinazione diversa della stessa specie, come fosse fuori sincrono. A differenza dei suoi compagni, infatti, non riesce ad accettare le asperità della metamorfosi, a gustarne la forza e a coglierne tutto il potere. Al contrario, l’immagine che le viene quotidianamente restituita dallo specchio, quel corpo che muta e che la sorprende ogni giorno con particolari nuovi e non richiesti, non la rappresenta. Non più. Le è estranea, sconosciuta, nemica.

Angelica Grivel, ventenne studentessa sarda di filosofia, modella e “figlia d’anima” di Michela Murgia, è una scrittrice esordiente. Questo è il suo primo romanzo.

Gifted with beauty and exceptional intelligence, she succeeds at school without much effort, yet struggles to connect with her peers. In truth, she doesn’t resemble the teenagers around her at all.

Because Luce, despite her age and the body of a girl her age, does not feel at ease in herself. It’s as if she belongs to a different variation of the same species, out of sync with the others. Unlike her classmates, she cannot embrace the harsh beauty of metamorphosis, its strength, or its transformative power. Instead, the image reflected daily in the mirror—the body that keeps changing, surprising her with new and unwanted details—no longer represents her. It feels alien, unfamiliar, hostile.

Angelica Grivel, a twenty-year-old Sardinian philosophy student, model, and “soul daughter” of Michela Murgia, makes her debut with this novel—her very first work of fiction.
