Pisa, primavera 1249. Un uomo cammina per le strade della città condotto per mano da un ragazzino. È cieco. Quando capisce di essere di fronte alla chiesa di San Paolo a Ripa d’Arno, inizia a correre a testa bassa. Se la fracassa contro la facciata, sotto lo sguardo atterrito del suo accompagnatore. Muore così, in maniera atroce, Pier delle Vigne, che fino a poche settimane prima era l’uomo più potente della corte di Federico II. Ma l’imperatore ha scoperto il suo tradimento, l’ha spogliato di ogni ricchezza e l’ha condannato.

Roma, oggi. Dario Arata, giovane dantista, si mette sulle tracce di quella vicenda. Perché Pier delle Vigne tradì il suo signore? E soprattutto: se una volta accecato fu lasciato libero, perché si uccise? Forse voleva scappare da qualcosa di ancora peggiore. Anche se è difficile immaginare cosa. Dario ci prova a partire dagli antichi commenti al XIII Canto dell’Inferno, dove Pier delle Vigne sconta la sua pena tra i suicidi. Inizia così un viaggio attraverso i secoli, con la sensazione che ci sia un segreto spaventoso da svelare.

Nella pietra e nel sangue” è insieme romanzo storico e giallo letterario, in cui passato e presente si intrecciano fino al gran finale. Ma è anche una scanzonata storia d’amore dei nostri tempi. Quella tra Dario e Lucia, che sanno starsi accanto di fronte agli orrori della storia.

Pisa, spring 1249. A man walks through the streets of the city, guided by the hand of a young boy. He is blind. When he realizes he is in front of the Church of San Paolo a Ripa d’Arno, he begins to run with his head down. He crashes against the façade, under the horrified gaze of his companion. This is how Pier delle Vigne dies, in a horrific manner—just weeks earlier, he had been the most powerful man at the court of Frederick II. But the emperor discovered his betrayal, stripped him of all his wealth, and condemned him.

Rome, today. Dario Arata, a young Dante scholar, sets out to trace this story. Why did Pier delle Vigne betray his lord? And above all: if he was left free once blinded, why did he take his own life? Perhaps he wanted to escape something even worse, though it is hard to imagine what. Dario tries to uncover the truth starting from the ancient commentaries on the 13th Canto of the Inferno, where Pier delle Vigne suffers his punishment among the suicides. Thus begins a journey across the centuries, with the feeling that a terrifying secret is waiting to be revealed.

In Stone and Blood is both a historical novel and a literary thriller, in which past and present intertwine until the grand finale. But it is also a lighthearted love story of our times: that of Dario and Lucia, who know how to stand by each other even in the face of history’s horrors.
