Roma, 27 aprile 1937. Muore Antonio Gramsci. Genova, 1 maggio 1937. Un uomo di quarantasei anni, piccolo di statura, imbottito di oppiacei e dall’aspetto affaticato si imbarca alla volta di New York, sul Rex, il transatlantico più potente e veloce mai costruito in Italia, vanto del duce e delle sue ambizioni di egemonia sul mondo. L’uomo ha un libro con sé, un libro tradotto da Pavese qualche anno prima, un libro dall’incipit fulminante: “Chiamatemi Ismaele”. L’uomo legge il libro e lentamente, durante la lunga traversata, intorno a lui sembrano accadere fatti e palesarsi figure di non semplice decifrazione. Sotto, in profondità, negli abissi oceanici e in quelli altrettanto sconfinati della mente, qualcosa, o qualcuno, prende consapevolezza di sé e inizia ad agire, muoversi, organizzarsi. Una strana, enorme, inquietante forza decide di ripensare sé stessa e il mondo terracqueo, riposizionarsi nella catena alimentare e riprendere il posto che ritiene di avere e di meritare: quello del dominatore, del vendicatore, del profeta. Di Dio. La creatura ha con sé due alleati: la scoperta della parola, questo incantesimo che solo gli umani sono riusciti sino ad ora a realizzare, e una memoria ineguagliabile. Il suo canto saprà essere tremendo.

A forty-six-year-old man, short in stature, loaded with opiates and looking fatigued, boards the Rex, the most powerful and fastest transatlantic ship ever built in Italy, a source of pride for the Duce and his ambitions of global hegemony, bound for New York. The man carries a book with him, translated by Pavese a few years earlier, a book with a striking opening line: “Call me Ishmael.” As he reads, during the long voyage, events seem to unfold around him and figures appear that are not easily deciphered. A strange, enormous, and unsettling force decides to rethink itself and the terrestrial world, to reposition itself in the food chain and reclaim the place it believes it holds and deserves: that of the dominator, the avenger, the prophet. Of God. The creature has two allies: the discovery of language, the spell that only humans have managed to achieve so far, and an unparalleled memory. Its song will be formidable.
